5 Simple Steps to Make (and keep) Kick-Ass Goals in 2021

How to set actionable goals you’ll actually keep this year!

It’s that time again! Christmas has come and gone, we’re being bombarded with advertisements for gym memberships and we can’t quite wait to forget that 2020 happened. 

So, you’ve got some big dreams for 2021 and want to set some bangin’ New Year’s resolutions?

Overwhelming, research suggests that most people give up their New Year’s resolutions by February (eek!). “Why?”, you ask? The reason is: not being clear enough on those goals.

We guarantee that setting actionable goals for the New Year (as opposed to arbitrary resolutions) will get you smashing your goals and realising those BIG dreams past February and all throughout 2021. 

Luckily for you, we’ve broken goal-setting into 5 simple steps to get you planning out the actionable goals you’ll actually keep this year.

So grab that shiny new planner and let’s get cracking!

Step 1. Get clear about what you really want

It’s important that firstly, you really drill down to the specifics of what you are really looking to achieve in 2021. Think about what is going to get you closer to living the life you truly want. 

Our co-founder, Georgia Rickard, is a big fan of vision boards as an effective (and fun!) way to get clear on what you want to achieve this year. 

Look for images and phrases that inspire you and represent what you want to achieve across your professional, financial, and personal life in 2021 and collate these into a collage. 

Whether you choose to do this digitally or on a physical board – make sure you place your vision board where you’ll see it daily.

Step 2. Break your goals down into actionable steps

Now that you’ve completed your vision board, it’s time to figure out how to actually begin working towards your dream life. The key to kicking BIG goals is by committing to breaking them into small steps – or as Bootcamp’s mindset coach Kait Rich says, “micro-steps achieve macro results”.

When you break down a goal into micro-steps, you’ll be surprised to find tasks you can tackle right now and tasks that you can schedule into your calendar straight away.

When a goal includes a measurable unit or an actionable step, it creates tangibility to your progress and benchmarks that can be tracked and compared – so you can be sure you’re heading in the right direction.

This is how you make progress toward your dreams.

✨ TIP: Kait recommends setting some Small, Medium and Large rewards for achieving each milestone. An example of a small reward could be a nice lunch out with a friend.

Step 3. Reach out to your circle for accountability

This is a HUGE one. It’s really important that you surround yourself with people who support you and encourage you to reach your goals.

At Bootcamp, we live by a quote from Jim Rohn: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”.

The people you surround yourself with will influence how likely you are to kick those micro and macro goals you’ve just set.

It’s a great idea to find yourself an accountability partner – someone who is as motivated and as passionate about achieving their goals as you are. Check-in weekly with each other to keep on track and celebrate each others’ milestones along the way.

 

Step 4. Tackle what could set you back early-on

Reality is that the right mindset can be the difference between you achieving your goals this year and failing to see them through. Yup, mindset is a big deal, people.

Simply put, if you don’t believe that what you desire is available to you you will never accomplish it.

The good news is that right now is the perfect time to identify what’s setting you back before it has the chance to hold you back.

Step 5. Regularly check-in and re-assess your goals

As you work micro-step by micro-stop towards achieving your goals, it’s important to regularly check-in with yourself and ensure that:

✨ (1) your goals continue to align with your values,

✨ (2) you’re staying on track, and

✨ (3) you reflect on your progress.

Schedule weekly and monthly check-ins throughout the year to re-assess your goals, update if necessary and, most importantly, celebrate your wins!
